Competitive Advantage

Competition has been shown to instill a number of great results; innovation, market pricing, ecosystem development to name a few. Michael Porter's competitive forces and competitive advantage models expand on this and continue to be a valid way to analyze competition. This last week VMware entered the embedded hypervisor market via its acquisition of Trango Virtual processors.

A couple thoughts:

VMware entry validates market. Always good to have a strong competing brand (even if you have to compete with it!) Their entry underlines the basis on which we have already built a successful business; that virtualization as delivered by an Embedded Hypervisor is a key gating technology for successful deployment of products in the mobile device space. OKL4 runs not just on ARM, but on MIPS, and x86. Our experience on all of those platforms gives us some advantages in helping customers integrate their enterprise virtualization requirements in a mobile world.

The future is open. We have witnessed a transition from proprietary closed source operating systems in mobile wireless space to open source. We witnessed initially the onslaught of Linux followed by popular Google Android operating system, which forced the hand of Nokia to open their Symbian OS and Windows Mobile which is normally not thought of as an open OS, but as Windows CE, is available in source code. It is already an open source marketplace when it comes to mobile software and certainly in the embedded space virtualization technology is expected to be published as open source. According to Michael Porter's competitive advantage model, score one for differentiation (= a firm seeks to be unique it its industry along some dimensions that are widely valued by buyers).
