Having Lots of Friends Doesn’t Make You an Influencer

I attended and spoke at the MarketingProfs SocialTech 2010 conference last week in San Jose. Silicon Valley is one of those places that induces creative thought around every corner; last week did not disappoint. These are a few of the soundbites.

  • Having lots of friends does not make you an influencer; It’s a set of behaviors and response dynamics
  • Tweets are the new Haiku - it’s an art form
  • Retweeting is the sincerest form of flattery
  • Social media should be across the company - HR, products, investor relations, marketing, etc.
  • Answer people are important in building communities and social networks
  • Social is about optimizing serendipity
  • ID key people in social graph & build relationship b/c they’re at center of sustained conversations around brand
  • Learn to re-use your content across all of your social and traditional marketing channels
  • B2P is the new B2B - Business to People, not Business to Business
  • It’s the quality of followers you have; it’s not the sheer quantity
  • Social Media Marketing is not about reaching many to influence a few but engaging a few to influence many!
  • Community manager mandates: be good listeners and curators of content
  • Become the corporate website that functions like the social website
  • Social media is a listening post

Iggy also had his 15 minutes of fame at Social Tech - thanks to Ann Handley @MarketingProfs http://bit.ly/bpNsI2
