Steve at MWC: Mobile Virtualization – a Gateway to Global Apps Stores

With the huge success of the Apple app store, and the strong emergence of the Android Market, and as many as 30 legacy applications stores in play, this week at MWC global players including Verizon , AT&T, NTT DoCoMo, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile, and Vodafone announced the “Wholesale Applications Community”.  Also, Ericsson chose MWC to announce its agreement with a group of operators to launch eStore, yet another white label applications marketplace.

Both efforts are intended to reduce fragmentation in a dynamic applications marketplace that is projected to explode in 2010 (IDC).  Consolidation and providing quality alternatives to the dominant applications channels are definitely good for consumers and for mobile ISVs.  We see a key role for mobile visualization in this trend –  enabling mobile devices to run more than one OS, and supporting invocation of applications in one guest OS from the UI of another (as on the Motorola Evoke).  A virtualized phone would then give operators and users the option of drawing from multiple applications markets and foster cross pollination among developer communities.
