Consulting Scientist & Co-founder

Gernot Heiser

Dr. Gernot Heiser – kangaroo chef, OS hero-maker, and “Eingebettetsoftware Übermensch" – is a pioneer in the field of operating systems and co-founder of OK Labs. Today, as the company’s Consulting Scientist, Gernot sets the direction for OK Labs research and development, sustaining OK Labs leadership in mobile virtualization and embedded systems software.

Before OK Labs, Gernot created and led the Embedded Real-Time Operating Systems research group at Australia’s Information and Communications Technology Centre of Excellence (NICTA). He still holds this position on a part-time basis, bridging between OK Labs and NICTA and enabling transfer of NICTA research for commercialization by OK Labs for deployment in mobile/wireless applications.

As a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Gernot developed the OS curriculum and led the development of research operating systems, providing the foundation for the NICTA OS group and, ultimately, OK Labs. Gernot was recently awarded the prestigious John Lions Chair of Operating Systems at UNSW where he continues to teach advanced-level courses and supervise doctoral students.

Gernot holds a doctorate in Computer Engineering from ETH Zurich and a Master of Science in Computer Science from Brock University.
