MEDIA ALERT Who: Gernot Heiser, CTO & Co-Founder of Open Kernel Labs What: “How Virtualization Can Improve Linux-based Mobile Application Robustness and Security ” Where: Linux World Expo 2007 Location: Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA When: August 7, 2007, 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
“How Virtualization Can Improve Linux-based Mobile Application Robustness and Security” Modern mobile applications feature immense software complexity with millions of lines of code, Internet connectivity and openness including the ability of end-users to download and execute untrusted code. This results in a growing number of security-relevant bugs and new ways to exploit them. This presentation introduces the concept and use of a minimal, trusted computing base to protect applications and will explain how to build this base with an Open Source microkernel.
Gernot Heiser is the Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Open Kernel Labs and the leader of the Embedded, Real-Time and Operating Systems Research Program at the National Center of Excellence for Information and Communications Technology in Australia. Dr Heiser is also a faculty member at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he created a suite of OS courses and led the development of several research operating systems. He holds the position of Professor for Operating Systems at UNSW, the only such chair in Australia, and continues to teach advanced-level courses and supervise a large number of Ph.D. students. Gernot Heiser holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich.
