OKL4 Open Source Downloads and Launch of GeekTV Invigorate Growth
BERLIN – OSiM World 2008 – September 17, 2008- Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), a global provider of systems software and virtualization technology for embedded systems in mobile devices, today announced that the OKL4 Community, established in December of 2007, has surpassed 1,000 members. In just over six months, the OK Community has succeeded in attracting a worldwide base of developers from 145 countries. This community has played a key role in determining the future of the OKL4 embedded hypervisor, virtualization capabilities and the development environment for mobile devices.
Activities such as local community meet-ups, developer discussions within the developer mailing list, a developer wiki, interaction on blogs and forums, and availability of relevant content—FAQs, tutorials, white papers, manuals, and videos on GeekTV—enable members from all over the world to exchange ideas and share tips in a productive environment.
The growth of the OK Community comes largely in response to growth in the embedded mobile handset market, including: the movement to open source application environments; a heightened interest in embedded virtualization to support legacy migration; hardware consolidation benefits for BOM cost savings; and the need to create embedded designs with greater security.
Virtualization was cited as one of the most exciting technologies for new designs in eg3.com’s August 2008 Insiders’ Guide: Embedded Opportunities, which also awarded OK Labs with both its 2008 Editors’ and Readers’ Tech Choice Awards. Virtualization, a frequent topic within the OK Community, is one of the primary capabilities of OKL4’s embedded hypervisor and its Secure HyperCell™ technology.
“A vibrant community with free exchange of ideas is what drives successful open source software technologies,” noted Steve Subar, CEO and president, OK Labs. “Our company believes strongly in building a global community supporting OKL4, delivering to our customers a superior virtualization platform for next-generation embedded and mobile applications.”
To enhance the effectiveness of the OK Community, the OK Labs support team established rigorous standards for response time to developer inquiries and created a project space within the developer wiki. Moreover, the OK Community is increasingly self-supporting and self-sustaining, with contributors to the forum answering questions and providing feedback to members.
