Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), provider of embedded virtualization software for mobile and connected devices, today announced that its market-leading software, OKL4, is now deployed in more than 1.5 billion mobile devices.
Chicago – January 19, 2012 Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs), provider of embedded virtualization software for mobile and connected devices, today announced that its market-leading software, OKL4, is now deployed in more than 1.5 billion mobile devices. With this milestone, OK Labs joins an elite list of companies with software embedded in more than 1 billion mobile phones, tablets and other connected devices.

According to the Market Research Group, total handset shipments for 2011 exceeded 1.5 billion, a 10% increase over 2010. In just five years, starting in 2007, OK Labs OKL4 customers have deployed the company’s software in1.5 billion devices, with shipments of over 300 million units in 2011 alone. OK Labs OKL4 is now incorporated into popular mobile devices from almost every major manufacturer, including HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba, and Sony Ericsson.

OKL4 and Mobile Security Trends

Android, with its increasingly dominant market share (43 percent as of Q3 2011 – Nielsen) presents the largest target for cybercrime. According to a recent study by McAfee, malware attacks on Android jumped 76 percent in the first half of 2011, due in part to the open and ubiquitous nature of the platform.

The ubiquity and vulnerability of Android together provide an unprecedented opportunity for additional growth of OKL4 and virtualization-based security solutions in 2012:

The ever-increasing onslaught of malware attacks and other exploits on Android devices

Demand for “dual-persona” Android-based devices to support mobile workers’ professional and personal needs

The Consumerization of IT, a.k.a. BYOD – “Bring Your Own Device” to work

These trends, individually and in combination, highlight the need for greater security on mobile devices, a demand uniquely met by deploying OKL4 mobile virtualization.
“Implementing Enterprise Mobility on Android and other open platforms stands out among today’s IT security challenges,” said Steve Subar, Founder and CEO of OK Labs. “The flexibility and military-grade security offered by OKL4 mobile virtualization will drive OK Labs deployment to new heights in 2012.”

Key Facts

Open Kernel Labs software is now deployed in more than 1.5 billion devices worldwide

Other mobile software companies with installed bases of 1 billion or more include Adobe, Google, Myriad and Oracle

Mobile device security will be a strong driver for mobile virtualization adoption in 2012
